- McMaster's PhD thesis, which analyzed failures in U.S. military strategy and leadership during the Vietnam War, served as the foundation for his groundbreaking book: Dereliction of Duty: Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam. A New York Times bestseller, the book is considered a classic and is widely read in military circles. 

- McMaster rose to fame in 1991, when as a captain he led an outnumbered cavalry troop to victory over Iraqi forces in the Battle of 73 Easting, considered the last great tank battle of the 20th century.
