Women Making History: How Anita Dunn gives back from the pinnacle of her political career
Former Senior Advisor to President Biden and White House Communications Director ANITA DUNN began her career as an intern under President Carter. Despite having few female role models at the beginning, Dunn prioritized breaking the mold of male-dominated Capitol Hill. Today, Dunn takes an active role in the career development of women in politics, but does not label her efforts mentorship: “Although I’m happy to mentor anybody who wants to walk through my door to get some advice, I’m a huge believer in sponsorship… a very active role in somebody’s career. It’s not just, ‘I’m going to give you advice, but I’m going to actively promote you. When I see an opening, I’m going to push you for that opening.’”
Anita Dunn most recently served in The White House as a Senior Advisor to President Joe Biden. In that role, Anita advised on all aspects of the administration, including messaging, communications, and overall strategy. Prior to that, Anita served as a Senior Advisor to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2020 campaign, helping lead the ticket to its historic win. Anita was a chief strategist to former President Barack Obama, as a senior campaign advisor and as the White House Communications Director. Anita oversaw all communications strategy and messaging and helped the former President navigate a complex legislative and political landscape early in his administration. Named one of Washingtonian’s most powerful women in 2019, Anita has broken barriers and holds a unique role in Washington, having been the only person who has served as a senior advisor of the winning campaigns for two different presidents. Anita also served in a variety of senior roles for other key Democrats throughout her career, including Tom Daschle, Bill Bradley, and Evan Bayh.
