In Conversation with John Mack: Living and Leading Well
Legendary finance leader JOHN MACK has been “described as ‘charismatic’ so regularly that it could be part of his name.” In this eye-opening moderated conversation, Mr. Mack offers indispensable insights into living and leading well, sharing his personal journey and riveting business story with audiences of all kinds.
Born of Lebanese immigrant parents, Mr. Mack grew up in Mooresville, NC. Earning a football scholarship, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Duke University in 1968.
Mr. Mack joined Morgan Stanley in May 1972 in the bond department and rose steadily to positions of increasing responsibility. He was named Vice-Presidient of the Firm in 1976, a Principal in 1977, and a Managing Director in 1979. He served as head of the Worldwide Taxable Fixed Income Division from 1985 to 1992, becoming a member of the Board of Directors in 1987. He became Chairman of the Operating Committee in March 1992 and was named President in June 1993. He became the President, Chief Operating Officer and a director of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. in May 1997 when the firm was created by the merger of Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter, two of the world’s leading financial services companies, and served in that position until 2001.
Upon leaving Morgan Stanley, Mr. Mack served as Co-Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse Group from 2003 to 2004 and the President, Chief Executive Officer, and a director of Credit Suisse First Boston from 2001 to 2004.
Mr. Mack returned to Morgan Stanley and served as Chairman of the Board from June 2005 until his retirement in December 2011. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Stanley from June 2005 until December 2009, during which time he oversaw the firm’s conversion into a bank holding company.
Mr. Mack serves as a senior advisor to Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC.
Mr. Mack served on the board of directors of Lending Club Corporation from December 2014 to June 2019 and of Glencore plc from June 2013 to April 2021.
Mr. Mack served as Chair of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and oversaw its merger with NY Hospital in 1997. He served as Chair of the merged New York Presbyterian Hospital from 2015 to 2018 and presently serves on its Executive Community. He serves on the Boards of The International Rescue Committee and New Fortress Energy.
